GC120: The Compostable Cup Revolution Backed by APP Group and Continental Cup

In a major move toward sustainable foodservice packaging, APP Group has partnered with Continental Cup to launch GC120, a new line of plastic-free, compostable, and recyclable cups. Designed to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions, GC120 cups represent a practical shift away from conventional plastic-lined options.

According to a Vivreau study, 50% of Americans experience guilt when buying single-use plastic water bottles, a figure that climbs to 61% among younger consumers aged 18 to 34. The GC120 cup line directly addresses these shifting consumer attitudes, offering a PFAS-free, food-safe option that is both compostable and recyclable.

At the heart of GC120’s design is Foopak Bio Natura, an innovative material developed by APP Group. This paperboard features a water-based barrier coating that ensures the cups can safely break down after use while maintaining the durability and heat resistance required in foodservice environments.

“As regulations tighten and consumer expectations evolve, it’s critical that packaging solutions are both high-performing and sustainable,” said Kin Keung Christopher Wong, SVP & Global Business Unit Head, Industrial White for APP. “GC120 delivers on both fronts, helping brands reduce their reliance on plastic without compromising on quality.”

GC120’s debut at the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show drew praise from industry leaders, highlighting its potential to become a scalable, eco-conscious alternative across the food and beverage industry. For businesses looking to phase out plastic-lined cups, GC120 offers a compliant, responsible, and future-forward solution.

This initiative is part of APP Group’s broader mission to drive sustainable innovation across its product lines. As a global leader in paper and packaging, APP Group continues to invest in solutions that support circular economy principles and long-term environmental stewardship.
